As I walked into the store, I noticed three people gathered around a telegraph machine at the Western Union counter. The station agent and a farmer were standing next to the device, while all I could see of the third person were two feet sticking out from under a desk.
"Here's your problem, mate," the voice under the counter said in a pointy Australian accent. I was surprised to see a black lad of about 14 emerge with a battery terminal in his hand.
"Bloody corrosion," he said, holding up the part for their inspection.
It's 1861, and Thaddeus Lowe has a dream as big as an ocean. The young inventor is convinced he's found a way to make the first trans-Atlantic flight. Then it blows him into the middle of the Civil War.
